Firs boast antibacterial properties and humidity control that contribute to the preservation of perishable food like Japanese Kamaboko boards. Also, they have been used in Shinto rituals and offerings since ancient times and play a beautiful tune for violins and pianos due to its well-defined grain.

With more than 100 years of hands-on contact with momi fir through the production of high-quality fir sotoba (grave markers), we have been able to decipher the benefits and characteristics of momi fir that have been utilized empirically for a long time.

次に、それぞれの特性を活かし、暮らしに有効なカタチに変換するようにピースを整えると
樅の字が現れる。
樅に頼っていく次の100年をどう描くかは、これまでの百年に渡る樅との経験が礎となる。
百年への敬意を、その背中を追うように反転した「百」の姿で表す。
百年の歴史にあたたかく見守られながら、新たな100年を見据える「樅100」が始まる。

東京、日の出。
多摩地域の西部に位置するこの地は、かつて良質な樅の天然林が広がっていました。

大地にどしりと根を張り、陽を受けて大空に向かってまっすぐに成長する樅。冬でも深い緑をまとい、樹齢も数百年から千年を超えるものも存在することから、古来より人々はその生命力に畏敬の念を覚え、神聖な樹木として信仰の対象とすることもありました。
そして江戸期以降、日の出地域において樅の神聖な佇まいを活かし卒塔婆の製作が盛んになります。

現在は樅の産出量は低減し、ドイツやカナダなど厳選された輸入材が多用されていますが、約300年続く伝統産業の文脈において実直に継承された樅への知見と加工技術は実を結び、日の出町ブランドの卒塔婆は全国で60%以上のシェアを誇る地域産業となっています。

The market for Hinode-sourced sotoba in Tokyo has been on a decline due to the dying-out of memorial service customs due to parishioners leaving their temples and an overall change in people’s lifestyles. However, the understanding of firs, the knowledge of their processing and manufacturing techniques, and an astute awareness of maintaining top quality have accumulated strongly over time. These factors have become the driving force behind bringing about a tradition anew.
From a small sapling into a large tree pointing towards the sky, the fir has transcended a vast period of time.
